I have written up a lot of player posts so far. I have looked at all of the Hall of Fame players, and when I run out of players, I probably will have added around 130 players or so. This is not right. Not all of these players are worthy. The point of this blog (that I didn't really do a great job explaining in the beginning) is to advocate for forgotten players who are worthy of the Hall of Fame, but this includes all players that
may be worthy. I want to spread appreciation for these great players, but also to have debates and educate people about lesser known players who were really good. However, I am a bit exclusive, since I know all about the Hall of Fame after a long, intense study of it. Below is a list of players commonly advocated for (and well known) who will not be featured on The Cooperstown Advocate. They are -
Vida Blue
Bert Campaneris
Ron Cey
Dave Concepcion
Tommy Davis
Steve Garvey
Tommy John
Jerry Koosman
Graig Nettles
Don Newcombe
Reggie Smith
Maury Wills
No El Tiante? Seriously? Tiant was as good or better than Catfish, Drysdale, Jesse Haines, Rube Marquard, maybe Burleigh Grimes, Jim Bunning, and others. He's a viable Hall of Fame candidate. Is this one of the moral decisions?
ReplyDeleteGarvey and Wills don't belong the Hall anyhow you look at it- Cey we've gone over before. Why is Concepcion getting singled out? He probably isn't a Hall of Famer, but he wasn't bad.
No, Tiant isn't really a moral decision. I just think that he's got too high an ERA, a winning percentage a little low, and not a lot of consistency considering the era in which he pitched. I only took him out a few months ago - I changed my standards a bit before that, ad he was one of many who I rejected around then. If you read my earliest posts, you may laugh. Concepcion was very good, but not a Hall of Famer. His absence gets a lot of complaints, and they are just too annoying.
Delete-Tiant's career ERA is not at all bad. 3.30 doesn't jump out at you, but he spent much of his career at Fenway, and his career ERA of 114 is Hall of Fame level.
Delete- He led the league in ERA twice, with marks of 1.60 and 1.91.
- He won 20 games four times
- He led the league in shutouts three times. In 1966 he led the league in shutouts despite only having 16 starts!
- He had a 3-0 record in the postseason.
-He drew a decent amount of support in the HOF balloting.
