Lucky Hall Of Famer Number 27 - Whitey Herzog

Whitey Herzog managed for parts of 18 seasons from 1973 through 1990. He won 1,281 games, lost 1,125, and tied three for a winning percentage of .532 (!) and was ejected 42 times in 2,409 games.

My opinion: Whitey Herzog is not a Hall of Famer.

  1. Maybe you're right, but I don't think it's right to dismiss him automatically because his winning percentage was not outstanding. Herzog is in the Hall of Fame because he was manager of two highly successful teams, the late '70s Royals and the Cardinals of the '80s, and was a big part of their success. The Royals were a .500 team when he took them over, and they won 102 games in his third year at the helm.

With the Cardinals, he took advantage of the cavernous ballpark and artificial turf to make a team with speed and an excellent defense.

At least in my opinion, he was an integral part of building those two excellent teams. I don't know if that makes him a Hall of Famer, but I think he deserves a closer look.
