Nicknamed "The Bionic Man," John was best known as the first to undergo an ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, now forever known as Tommy John Surgery, on September 25, 1974. Despite the uncertainty of the procedure, John returned to the mound in 1976 and pitched another 14 seasons, finally hanging up his spikes at age 46. His 26 MLB seasons are the second-most of all time, and his 288 wins rank 26th.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
